Nikon kembali mengeluarkan DSLR kelas pemula. Setelah sukses dengan D40 dan D60, kini perusahaan yang konsisten dengan produk kamera dari Jepang ini mengeluarkan varian terbarunya yaitu Nikon D5000. Nikon D5000 memiliki layar yang bisa diputar, ini memudahkan untuk merekam video atau menggambil gambar di sudut-sudut sulit, misalnya diatas kepala atau dibawah kaki. layar semacam ini juga membantu dalam merekam video diri sendiri. Namun sedikit disayangkan bahwa dalam Nikon D5000 ini layar turun kebawah daripada kesamping seperti kamera Olympus E-620 atau kamera superzoom lainnya, akibatnya ketika mengunakan tripod, layarnya terhalangi oleh kaki tripod.

Bila Anda lebih suka mengunakan live view seperti kamera kompak, Nikon D5000 cukup menarik karena layarnya bisa diputar, dan live viewnya juga memiliki Auto focus yang bisa mengikuti objek (belum diketahui keefektifannya).

Lalu juga perlu diperhatikan kompatibilitas lensa. Nikon D5000 hanya mendukung lensa-lensa Nikon yang berkode AF-S. Meskipun banyak lensa baru yang memiliki AF-S, tapi banyak juga lensa legendaris Nikon yang tidak memiliki hal tersebut seperti lensa-lensa prime/non-zoom seperti 50mm f/1.8 yang harganya relatif murah tapi berkinerja tinggi dibanding lensa-lensa Nikon lainnya. Meski Anda tetap bisa mengunakan lensa tersebut, tapi Anda terpaksa mengunakan manual fokus. Bagi pengguna yang telah memiliki lensa-lensa merek tertentu, maka sebaiknya mempertimbangkan untuk tetap membeli kamera yang sama mereknya.
