D700 adalah kamera DSLR profesional ‘kompak’ pertama dari Nikon, dan bersaing dengan Canon EOS yang baru ini mengumumkan 5D Mark II dan Sony DSLR -A900. Kemampuan D700 hampir mirip dengan D3, saudara tuanya yang telah muncul terlebih dahulu, bahwa sensor image yang dihasilkan sebesar 12,1 MP fullframe (FX) dan memiliki mesin yang identik, namun memiliki ukuran body yang lebih kecil karena D700 tidak dilengkapi dengan vertical grip layaknya D3. Keduanya sama-sama memiliki keunggulan dalam hal pemakaian sensor CMOS berukuran 24 x 36mm (mendekati ukuran film 35mm), sehingga kinerja sensor dalam meningkatkan kualitas hasil foto meningkat tajam. Apalagi dengan sensor FX, tidak lagi dikenal adanya istilah crop-factor 1,5x pada lensa yang dipasang, sehingga bila kamera FX dipasangi lensa 14-24mm maka akan memberikan panjang fokal apa adanya, bukan dikali 1,5 menjadi 21-36mm (layaknya bila dipasang di kamera berformat DX). Oleh karena itu kamera FX amat cocok untuk memotret landscape (bila memakai lensa ultra wide tentunya).
